So you meet someone and what is the first thing you say? HOW ARE YOU!!!
In Lithuanian it is: KAIP TAU EINAS? "Sekasi" would be more correct instead of "einas" but it still works.

PS In Lithuanian there are no silent letters, just like spanish you pronounce every letter phonetically.
Exple: A is like "are". E is like "eddy", I is like "it", U is like "oops". get it?

I do (get it) BigGrin
My 5 year old son for now goes to school where majority of kids are Latinos, so he is amused, that his friends pronounce many letters just like his mommy.

For Lithuanian language students here is a hint on "who-is-who" when introduced to a Lithuanian princess:........If her last name ends in "...niene" or "...iene" (ex. Burboniene, smitiene) then she IS married......If her last name ends in "...te" (ex. Burbonaite, smitaite) then she is NOT married....There is no way to tell mens marrital status, what a shame......Class dismissed

Asta Asta Asta, what can I say, here we are learning basic Lithuanian and you throw this "herring" of "OR SHE WAS MARRIED". Ladies and gentlemen, while Asta is correct at a sophmore level, let me remind you..........this is a FRESHMAN CLASS.

Now where were we.......let's tackle pronouns and here are some of them with English first: You=tu, I=as(h) and Asta is a she=ji........Glare

So now we are all in 2010....we made it....wow....So how was 2009 for you? Good? Not good? Or so so.......In Lithuanian "good"=gerai, "not good"=ne gerai, "so so"=taip sau...............So there you have it, several new words for 2010.

Did you know that every person in the whole world at one time or another used a Lithuanian word to express themselves? Did you? Okey you say, so what is this word wiseguy?.....drum roll please.....ahem.......the word is....."Achooo". It is said mostly when sneezing, but in Lithuanian it means THANK YOU and we write it simply as "aciu".

Most people respond with "God bless you", we say "I sveikata" (to health) which also works when drinking and toasting....but that's another story.

Welcome to our LITHUANIAN-IN-THREE-EASY-STEPS class (Mr.Mrs. or Miss?) Stankavich.
We learn common sentences and phrases so one could "get around" in lithuanian.
Tutor (that is me) encourages students (that is you) to ask questions. SO, DO NOT HESITATE TO ASK!!!

Now, I'm going to ask a question and see if you can figure out what I'm saying - Hint: See post 2 to 12 for translations

"...........(Tutor) Labas Stankavich, kaip tau einas, gerai, negerai? (Stankavich) Aciu, taip sau............."

PS There are lots of Lithuanians in Huston area and Ms. Siga is one of the best. When she invites....GO!!! It is not a request it is an order.

Okey, break is over, back to class everybody:

We already know how to say "HELLO" now let's do "GOODBY"...............Well, you could say "ta-ta" but it best to say "SUDIEV" (with God) or this very popular........"IKI PASIMATIMO" (till we meet again).

"Conjunctions" are very important in any language. Most can be said in a one-word-sentences. Examples:

.......WHERE?....Kur?
.......WHEN?......Kada?
.......WHAT?......Kas?
.......WHY?........Kodel? and my favorite HOW?.....Kaip?.....(Me know how, me want to know when?)

With(su) these few words you can form sinple sentences and to find your way in Lithuania.

Simple sentences:.....Where(Kur) are you(tu) going(eini)?....When(Kada) are you(tu) going(eini)?

Enough for today.

Just a note of interest: In most languages, knowing 50 words will get you where you want to go....100 words will rate you kudos....200 words makes you a translator.
Most speakers never use more than 150/200 words daily.
We learned so far about 20 words, so you are on your way...Woot ThumbsUp

PS If you(tu) need something translated or if you want to know how(kaip) to say it....Just post it here(cia).
